First timers to face the heat from repeaters in Telangana medical entrance exam

In total 7,000 students are reappearing for the state medical entrance examination this year. These students have completed Intermediate between 2011 and 2014.

Hyderabad: The number of medical aspirants in the Telugu state has not come down. Considering that a total of 7000 aspirants will be reappearing for the state medical entrance examination this year; the competition for the first timer only seems to be getting tough. These hundreds of thousands of students have completed their intermediate between 2011 and 2014. Now they are prepared to write the medical test again.

Telangana medical entrance test will be held on July 9 and almost 7,000 aspirants (who finished their intermediate between 2011 and 2014) are reported to have registered for the exam. Majority of these students have enrolled into other degree courses like B,Sc, B.Com or a professional course; yet, they are still keen to try to make it through a course in medicine.

A further break-up highlights that as on June 30, 167 students (2011 batch), 455 (2012 batch), 1,474 (2013 batch) and 5,041 (2014 batch) have registered for the medical entrance test.

Another figure of 15,535 aspirants is worthwhile. This is the total number of students who have completed their intermediate in 2015 and are also termed as regular repeaters.

In comparison, there are almost 34,000 first time aspirants for the medical entrance exam. They are likely to face a stiff competition, given the high number of repeaters this year.

Among the lot of repeaters, there are many old students who continue to write the exam. There are aspirants born in 1970, who will be reappearing for the exam in 2016 also. Then, 9 aspirants were born in 1981, 6 in 1982, eight in 1983, and 33 in 1988. In one way, this is the parent’s age of many new students who are also appearing for the exam.

The EAMCET-2016 Convenor, N.V. Raman Rao said to the Hindu that 148 candidates who were born in 1980s are testing their luck this time.

“This is a phenomenon observed over the years. Some of these are genuine.” The repeaters continue to throng the test despite opportunities for medical courses increasing abroad, particularly China and Philippines apart from the traditional destinations like the former USSR countries Russia, Belarus and Ukraine among others.

However, officials feel some of these have other motives as well and some of the previous cases proved that they indulge in impersonation and also use various methods to help their friends and relatives.

“The information of senior candidates has been passed onto the police who are verifying their antecedents and their intention of applying,” Prof. Rao said.
