Ernakulum Medical College in chaos as Cardiologist goes on leave

Kochi: The Ernakulam Government Medical College is the only medical college in the state which does not have a cardiologist posted on campus as per recent media reports. Dr Abdul Khader the lone part-time consultant cardiologist, went on leave over a month ago, and the hospital’s frantic search for a replacement seems to have turned into a futile effort. Luckily the PG Medicine students have not been affected as Dr. Khader never taught them. They have been turning for their 2nd year teaching to Kottayam Medical College or Kozhikode Medical College.

The authorities’ bid to find a permanent posting has not succeeded with two assistant professors in cardiology appointed from the PSC list by the Director of Medical Education (DME) not reporting for duty. The replacement search thus continues. Presently, the posts of one professor, one associate professor and two assistant professors in cardiology have already been created in the college.

The EMC authorities are now waiting for Dr. Khader to return in a week’s time, as he would come as the much sought after relief by the patients of the hospital. “However, that’s not a permanent solution at a government medical college. At least one permanent cardiologist should be there to teach the students and take care of the patients,” Dr N.K. Sanil Kumar, leader, Justice VR Krishna Iyer Movement told the Deccan Chronicle.
