Equal stipend of Rs 23,500 for both MBBS, BDS: MAIDS interns take to streets
New Delhi:- Around 100 BDS interns from 1st to 4th year of prestigious Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) observed a strike in front of Delhi Health Minister's Camp Office demanding an increase in their stipend to make it equal to MBBS interns. The said stipend amount has not been raised since 2003.
The stagnating stipend has been a burning issue with the BDS interns keeping in view the cost of living. In the year 2003, the stipend of both MBBS and BDS students was set at the rate of Rs 8,900 per month. The remuneration of BDS students continues to stagnate at the rate of Rs 8,900 since- despite the fact that similar category interns in MBBS courses have undergone three onward revisions since 2003.
It is stated that the stipend of MBBS students with Central Government Medical Colleges and institutions since 2003, has been revised over three times and reached Rs 23,500. However, the BDS student’s stipend continues to remain the same.

Interns said, “ We are protesting in front of Delhi Health Minister's Camp Office and have decided not to attend our posting and clinic unless our demands are addressed. we come through the same entrance exam as MBBS Students (NEET). Also we have same number of working days and the Equal course duration. The stipend of MBBS Student and BDS student is same in the year 2003 i.e Rs 8,900. Since then the stipend of MBBS Students have revised 3 times and is presently at Rs.23,500/P.M. But the stipend for BDS interns is lying stagnant at Rs.8,900 for 16 years”
They added, “We are gathered here to demand justice. To stand for our rights, Our honor. We demand equal pay for MBBS and BDS Interns. We have been fighting over this issue for 3 years but the officials and government authorities have turned a blind eye to our justice. We Demand Justice,” the interns demanded.
