Dr Sudha Seshayyan becomes 10th Vice Chancellor of Dr MGR Medical University,Tamil Nadu
Chennai: Dr MGR Medical University has finally got its 10th Vice Chancellor. Dr Sudha Seshayyan, a senior faculty of the prestigious Madras Medical College (MMC), has been appointed the Vice Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu- based varsity on 29th December.
Governor Banwarilal Purohit issued the order appointing her to the post for a term of three years, a Raj Bhavan release had stated.
She replaces Dr S Geethalakshmi, who retired from service a few days ago. Dr Seshayyan's appointment would take effect from the date of her assuming office.
Dr Seshayyan, presently the Director and Professor of Institute of Anatomy in the over a century old MMC, has an outstanding academic record with a teaching experience of more than 30 years. She is familiar with University administration having functioned as Registrar of the MGR Medical University, the release went on to add.

For her role as a teacher and an administrator she has been decorated with the best administrator award by the Medical University.
She has rich administrative experience having held various positions, including the post of the Vice-Principal of the MMC, and been a member of premier Editorial Review Board for Grays Anatomy and continues to be a member of the International Advisory Board for reviewing the publication.
Her articles on Anatomy and Medical Sciences have appeared in the Science Encyclopaedia of Tamil University.
She had led the team that embalmed late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's body in 2016.
Noted for her Hindu religious discourses and oratory in Tamil, she has for long been a master of ceremonies of key government events, including swearing in functions of new governments.
"I am honoured to have been selected. It is a huge responsibility and I work hard to ensure that I help the university grow from strength to strength," she said while speaking to TOI.
Medical Dialogues had recently reported about the tough competition that the applicants had faced to acquire the top post. Out of the 41 candidates, including retired Professors, Deans and Directors of Medical Education, Senior Professors in government and private colleges, who had applied for the VC position, 10 were shortlisted for the final interview.
Out of 10, 3 candidates were shortlisted by the search committee to be later interviewed by Governor Purohit.
During a face-to-face interview before the three-member selection committee, they were asked to make a 20-minute presentation on their vision for the university as to what they wished to do if they get selected as the head of the medical institution. The presentation was followed by a detailed discussion that lasted for another 20 minutes.

MGR Medical University runs 22 government medical colleges, as many self-financing colleges and several other dental and paramedical institutions.
