Dehradun: The Medical Council of India in a major relief to the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC), has given it a period of 15 days to ensure compliance to shortcomings pointed at by the council, recently. The apex education regulator had pointed at faculty recruitment deficiencies, as well as, resident doctors being less in number at the hospital.

The team had observed that departments like pharmacology, pathology microbiology and forensic medicines were almost non- functional at the college. Further, they had found the distance between two beds in the hospital wards to be lesser than asked for, in accordance with the standard specification. The team had also pointed out the paucity of medical journals in the college library and the lack of a separate section for minor eye surgery.

The Principal, Doon Medical College, Dr Pradip Bharati Gupta assured that the pointed discrepancies would be taken care of. He informed that the college has recruited 14 Junior Residents and one Senior Resident (SR), adding that all the remaining vacant faculty posts would soon be filled up.

Government Doon Medical College had in the past been granted two LOPs for their first and second batch of 150 students each for the years 2016 and 17, respectively. It was for the 3rd batch that the MCI visited the college this year.

The LOPs granted so far were given on the promise that the college will continue to upgrade itself, continuously, and have the MCI over for assessment, as well. It had been further stated that renewals would follow, the continuous up gradation of the facility, reports Pioneer.

As things stand the college would have to eventually upgrade itself from the present 300- bed associated hospital to a 750- bed one, for further admissions.
