Doon Medical College begins faculty recruitment in a big way

College Currently has more than 40% vacancies

Dehradun: The Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) has taken on the task of filling all its vacant faculty positions in accordance with the Medical Council of India (MCI) norms. Walk in interviews of applicants for 54 posts of senior residents (SR), junior residents (JR) and tutors were held on Monday, February 20.

The Uttarakhand Medical Education Recruitment Board has been requested by the college to begin the process of recruitment for the vacant faculty positions of professors, associate professors and assistant professors.

Principal Government Doon Medical College, Dr. Pradeep Bharati Gupta told the Pioneer the first week of March would see the college fill all its faculty positions. There are more than 40% vacancies at the college presently.

When the Medical Council of India team visited the college in December 2016 to renew its Letter of Permission (LOP), given to it the previous year, it observed various discrepancies, however, what concerned it most were the increasingly high faculty positions lying vacant. In February, the Medical Council of India sent the college a letter asking them to fill up the vacant positions within a month’s time.

The medical college at present has 60 professors, associate professors and assistant professors. The Government Doon medical college has recruited professors on a fixed monthly salary of Rs 1.23 lakh, associate professor on Rs 1.10 lakh and assistant professor on Rs 95,000 salary. Similarly, the senior resident is employed on a monthly salary of Rs 60,000 while the pay of Junior resident and tutor is fixed at Rs 52,000 per month.

Many a reason are attributed to the high leaving rate of faculty at the college. Some of the outstanding reasons are delay in disbursal of salary, undue interference in work and internal politics in the college. All these lead to disgruntlement in the staff and their resulted departure from the college.
