Mumbai: Citing a previous example of 1977 year, when additional intakes were allowed on account of academic confusion over MBBS admissions, parents of medical aspirants are reported to have written to the Directorate of Medical Education(DMER), to start additional batches for the academic year 2016-17. The demand comes keeping in mind the NEET& CET fiascoes that occurred earlier in the year, leaving many bright minds stranded without admissions. A letter addressed by parents to the DMER has called this leaving behind of brighter aspirants as a 'grave injustice' to them.

The DMER letter by the parents states that the commencement of additional batches for the academic year 2016-17 would end the ‘grave injustice’ done to the students left behind.

The additional batch concept is nothing new and emerges from an earlier precedence, when the government allowed an additional intake over the confusion prevailing in the 1977-78 admissions. The Medical Council of India in that year had decided to make both class X and XII students eligible for entrance to the MBBS course.

“In the academic year 1977-78, two generations of aspirants were eligible for admissions and hence the government instructed medical colleges to start additional batches,” said Devendra Sortey, a Nagpur parent.

The DMER is being requested by parents to take a decision similar to the one it took earlier, in order to incorporate 70 vacant seats by running additional batches in the state.

“Owing to confusion over entrance exam and syllabi, this year’s batch of aspirants have been disadvantaged,” Sortey told Indian Express .According to him the confusion prevailing had ended in the ones with high scores being left behind and those with lowerer scores getting admissions.

The parent’s written plea may not render results, according to Dr Pravin Shingare, as the Supreme Court had negated the DMER’s proposal to fill vacancies, and its order had no provisions for additional batches.
