Delhi gets new UG medical college in RML hospital with 100 MBBS seats

New Delhi: The prestigious Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML Hospital) which currently imparts education for various PG medical courses is now moving towards offering MBBS course.


To facilitate this plan, a new Undergraduate medical college will be established with RML hospital initially with 100 MBBS seats. The hospital has already sought the approval of the apex medical regulator, Medical Council of India (MCI).


For the same, respective departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Community Medicine; following Co-ordination and Execution committee are being formed in view of the New UG Medical College for MBBS course sanctioned with the hospital.

At present, Delhi has 17 medical colleges, out of which only 9 offer MBBS course with 1,150 seats including




  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) - 50

  • Army College of Medical Sciences- 100

  • Dr Baba Sahib Ambedkar Medical College-100

  • Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research-100

  • Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC)-250

  • Lady Hardinge Medical College -200

  • North Delhi Municipal Corporation Medical College -50

  • University College of Medical Sciences and GTB Hospital- 150

  • Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital-150


Talking about the facilities at the medical facility to offer MBBS course, Dr V K Tiwary, Medical Superintendent of RML told TOI, "We have the faculty and necessary infrastructure in place to start the course from the 2019-20 session itself."

According to many faculty members, the hospital was asked by the Health Ministry to work on the project about two years ago to overcome the shortage of doctors. A detailed project report was prepared, requirements were identified and recently the hospital moved the proposal for necessary approvals.


RML Hospital, formerly known as Willingdon Hospital, was established by the British for their staff and had only 54 beds. At present, the hospital has more than 1500 beds in its facility.


In a year hospital provides services to about 18 lakhs patients as OPD cases, admits about 67000 patients in Indoor and about 3 lakhs patients are attended in the Emergency. About 10000 yellow fever vaccination and 915 delivery cases. Similarly, about 5,000 CT Scan, 1.70 lakhs X-Ray cases, 28 lakhs laboratory tests and about 17,000 Ultrasound are done. The hospital conducts about 9,000 Major and 40,000 Minor operations during a year.
