Conversion of PG Diploma to Degree: MGM Medical College surrenders 49 seats

Indore: Subsequent to its notice giving last chance to all medical colleges to convert their Post-Graduate (PG) Diploma seats into MD/MS seats, the Health Ministry is getting applications from medical colleges across the country.


According to a recent report by The Free Press Journal, the Indore-based deemed Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGM Medical College) has applied for the conversion 49 PG Diploma seats to PG degrees.


The MGM Medical College has applied for surrendering PG Diploma seats in specialities including- Chest and TB, Pathology, Paediatrics, ENT, Radio Diagnoses, Anaesthesia, Ophthalmology and Radio Therapy.


Earlier, Tamil Nadu government had put forward 393 PG Diploma seats including those in the specialisation of Gynaecology, Dermatology and Orthopaedics in front of Union Health Ministry for conversion to PG degrees.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about the public notice issued by the Union Health Ministry giving a last chance to medical colleges to take advantage of the scheme proposed by the Medical Council of India (MCI) which decided to stop all MCI recognised PG diploma courses in Medical colleges and give equal number of MD/MS seats in return.


After receiving the application for the conversion, the ministry is required to issue a notification omitting the name of Diploma in respect of the said medical institute and forward the application along with omission notification and undertaking of the medical college to the Board of Governors Medical Council of India (MCI BoG) for further recommendation. The Last date to issue a letter of permission by the minsitry for the academic session 2019-20 is 28.02.2019

The medical college management is optimistic to get the Union Health Ministry's approval since the ministry is going to consider the student-teacher ratio and the medical college believes to have the appropriate number of PG teachers.

Talking to The Free Press Journal, Dean MGM Medical College Dr Jyoti Bindal stated, "We have applied for surrendering all PG diploma seats to get PG degree seats. We hope to get the approval for all seats as we have appropriate number of PG teachers of all subjects."


According to medical college's spokesperson Dr Rahul Rokade, after getting approval of PG Degree seats, the medical college will have 157 PG degree seats.
