Christian Medical College say NO to government quota seats
Christian Medical College, Ludhiana is in the news for becoming one of the 3 colleges that have been ruled out MBBS seat allotments through government quota this year. This being so, keeping minority interests- as first priority. The two others- Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Guru Ram Das Medical College, Amritsar in this list of three, however, have been found following the same course, for the sake of financial viability.
Earlier, 50 per cent seat sharing in these colleges had been introduced by the state government through its February 6th notification this year. The notification spoke of 50% seat sharing by all private medical colleges under the government quota and an annual fee cap for this quota at Rs.2.2 lakhs.
However, CMC, Ludhiana along with Adesh and Shri Guru Ram Das Medical Colleges were seen defying the February 6 notification of the government soon after its issuance.
CMC Ludhiana, out of its total 75 seats, had decided to keep only 12 seats for Punjab students in the open and reserve category as management quota. While a maximum of the college's 48 seats were kept aside for Christian minorities, followed by 11 for the NRIs and 4 seats for the all-India open quota.

In a similar move, Christian Medical College, Vellore was seen initiating Counselling for MBBS/ BDS admission to medical and dental colleges on Monday, with no seats on display for allotment through government quota. Though 8 other self-financing colleges in Tamil Nadu on the other hand had 862 seats on display.
Meanwhile, the Vellore CMC's government quota seat allotment omission during the MBBS/BDS counselling has left many a student disappointed. Many top rankers were turned away by the authorities with 'there will be no seats in state quota for CMC.'
"Admission to all 100 students to CMC will be done through management quota as per court orders," Selection Committee Secretary, G Selvarajan told TOI.
Parents of students looking at government quota expressing disappointment to the TOI stated, that CMC had been their choice option as it charged Rs.3000 per year against the Rs 13,500 in government, had a better institutional credibility, infrastructural facilities and a faculty of repute. The Christian Medical College's priorities reflected in the officials revealing that 84 seats were reserved for students with church referrals that run hospitals in rural areas and network with CMC. Furthermore, they also said were three seats reserved for SC/ST students and one for the Medical Council of India( MCI).
CMC as an institution have in the past been in the eye of a storm, during PG admissions as well. However, the state, CMC told TOI, had "obliged" and allotted nearly 50% of the 195 PG seats, including in-demand clinical degree courses, exclusively for Christians
CMC Vellore in the past has stood firm on its stand of no state interference in its counselling and admission process. Last year it went as far as admitting just one student, a son of a martyr to clear its stance on no state interference in its admission process.
