Chintpurni Medical College troubles continue to brew

Patiala: The Chintpurni Medical College(CMC) student shift seems to be running into troubled waters all over again with students now complaining that the management is deliberately trying to show them short of attendance in order to delay the perspective shift ordered by the courts.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on September 8 had directed the Punjab Government to follow the Medical Council of India’s laid shifting procedure and transfer the students to various colleges of the state.

These students have been suffering since 2011 after the MCI’s disapproval of the institution in the face of various anomalies in the functioning. However, despite this, the college admitted students in 2011, 2014 and 2016.

While the 150-student of the 2011 batch were shifted at the behest of the high court earlier a fresh petition by 101 students of the 2014 batch was considered by the High court on Friday for a shift as well.

The college has already lost two surety bonds of Rs 10 crore and Rs 2 crore furnished to admit the students in 2014 and 2016 on the recommendations of committees appointed by the Supreme Court.

Following the surety bonds, the apex court had allowed the college to admit medical students on condition that it would meet all requirements laid down by the MCI. The college, however, failed to meet the MCI guidelines in 2014 and then again in 2016, leading to forfeiture of sureties.

Tribune reports that the parents are now complaining of college authorities keeping their wards on tenterhooks. Members of the Chintpurni Medical College Parents Association, Pathankot, organized a meeting in Patiala, showing concern about the annual examination of the students, scheduled in November this year.

Dr Shuhil Garg, President of the Association, complained that the college was deliberately marking their children absent from classes to show lecture shortage and appealed to the state government to shift students as soon as possible in order to ease the situation for the students and facilitate their exam appearance.

The association blamed the management for trying to delay the shift by shortening attendance reports the Tribune.
