PGI Chandigarh to have not one but Two Deans

Chandigarh: The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) has been granted the Union Minister for Health Mr. JP Nadda’s approval for appointment of two deans for academics and research respectively. This decision was taken at a meeting held on Thursday, at the Governing body's meeting, which was chaired by Mr. Nadda. The decision to have two deans at the institute has been taken to give impetus to research at the institute which has faced setbacks in the past few years.


The PGIMER, Director, Dr. Jagat Ram also seems inclined to give the sphere of research the much need impetus. He has with this purpose in mind has often been seen in frequent interactions with researchers at the institute. He is also been trying to resolve issues faced by them in theit respective research areas .


“A proposal was made to have two deans in the institute for academics (Dean 1) and research (Dean 2). The agenda was presented at the GB meeting and the President of the Institute, JP Nadda, has given in principal approval,” said a senior officer from the PGIMER.


The proposal to have two Deans at the institute follows the pattern of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, which also has two Dean appointments.


The three senior most doctors of the institute are being recommended as choices for the post.


“A note will be sent to the president of the institute, wherein three names of the senior most doctors will be sent for these two posts,” a PGI official told HT.


The probable names to be recommended to the Minister, for the Dean positions are those of: Dr Rajesh Kumar, Head, School of Public Health; Dr A Rajwanshi, Head, Department of Cytology and Dr D Behera, Head of Pulmonary Medicine.


The present Dean, PGIMER is to retire in July. The decision would be carried out after he goes home.
