Chandigarh: The 50 acre stretch granted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), by the administration, is now calling for attention on development, that can be initiated on it.The land has been granted to the institute, in the Sarangpur area, by the Chandigarh authorities. V P Singh, UT Administrator and Governor of Punjab has already expressed his support to the PGI administration about the transfer of land to the institute. PGI officials will be meeting the governor to discuss the issue, reveal sources at the institute.

Earlier this week, a meeting was held which was attended by senior faculty members. During the meeting, discussions were held about which centers could come up at the allotted land.

Institute sources revealed, that Dr Jagat Ram, the Institute’s Director, was thinking about the new facilities that can be developed at the center; sources said the institute’s Director has now written to all the HODs to come up with suggestions about possible new facilities at the center, “keeping in mind the current situation at the PGI and also the institute’s priorities for patient care.”

The proposals under discussion include new state of art facility hospital ,screening OPD, genetic and chronic rehabilitation center, trauma and emergency care, cancer centers and others say PGI sources.

PGI officials believe patient care at the institute would improve with the introduction of the new facility. “So far, nothing has been decided on which new facility will come up on the land, but the new facility will definitely decrease the rush at the main campus,” said a senior official to ieNation. The official went on to say: “For example, if screening OPD or trauma center comes up at Sarangpur, it will help to bring the rush down at the main campus. The OPDs and the trauma center, currently, are always jam-packed.”

The crowded footfall at the institute, is one of the major problem that calls for resolving. According to Director, PGIMER, it will be his priority task to find solutions to the problem of overcrowding at the institute. As per PGI statistics, around 10,000 patients visit the OPD every day. Adding to the rush are family members who accompany the patients to it; raising the number visiting the OPD to approximately 20,000.
