The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) has appealed to Samaritans to donate generously to its poor Patient Welfare Fund. The fund looks after treatment of patients below poverty line(BPL) who come to it from all across India for treatment.

A cell for poor patients which receive donations on their behalf needs to have a broader fund base to treat a large number of BPL patients at the institute. “The rush of patients is unprecedented. The institute is providing financial support to hundreds of beneficiaries coming from far-off places for treatment,” said PGI spokesperson Manju Wadwalkar told the New Indian Express

A PGI statement added: “Donations are accepted either through cheque (in favour of Director PGIMER) or cash at the poor patient cell near the Main Reception, Nehru Hospital, under Section 80G of the income tax Act.” According to hospital records, over 25 lakh patients visited PGI last year. The year before over 24 lakh patients visited the out-patient department of this premier healthcare facility reports TNIE.
