Chandigarh: The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh which is in a major expansion mode now has three most sought after approved projects worth Rs 1475 crores, under its wing

The Advanced Mother and Child Centre, and the Advanced Neurosciences Centre-two of the three approvals will take shape in Chandigarh; while the third, a satellite centre of the PGI will be set up at Una in Himachal Pradesh. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's Delegated Investment Board gave its approval to these projects at its meeting in New Delhi, on Friday. Besides senior functionaries of the Health Ministry, representatives of NITI Aayog, the Finance Ministry, and the PGI Director, Dr Jagat Ram were present at this meeting.

The approval decision comes at a good time, as the present mother and child centre and neurosciences centre at the PGI are hard-pressed and overloaded with a patient rush, three to four times their capacity.

This results in patient neglect and failure in terms of timely intervention in critical situations.

Una's 300-bedded PGI satellite centre will help cater to the Himachal Pradesh belt of patients which in turn would reduce patient load on the PGI, reports The Tribune.
