Chandigarh: The process to start 25 modular operation theaters at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), has been initiated. 'Request for proposal' from architects and architectural firms has been floated by the engineering wing of the institute. The project is estimated to cost Rs.250 crore.

The long pending demand of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research faculty for an OT complex at the institute seems to be reaching fruition. Land for the project has been identified by the Committee instituted for the purpose already. The new 'Operation Theater complex' will be equipped with all the modern facilities and it will be a state-of-the-art complex, said an official.

Speaking to Chandigarh Newsline, the engineering officials at PGI informed that once proposals were received from architectural firms, tendering would follow. "The process has now started and we are expecting that things will now proceed faster," said an official.

Presently, there are operation theaters attached to every institute department. The doctors at PGI feel once the new complex is in place, it would end the long wait of patients, due to overcrowding.

The PGI Faculty Association has been demanding that "a world-class new Operation Theater complex" be developed by the administration.

In October 2015,after an administrative meeting between the representatives of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research's Faculty Association, an announcement was made that it would take 3-5 years for completion of the new modular operation theater complex. Shortage of operation theaters was leading to the ever increasing patient wait list, said the doctors.

A senior doctor from the Department of Surgery, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research,on Saturday, emphasized on the need for an operation theater complex. "It has become very important to have an OT complex, which will have modern facilities that don't exist presently," he said.
