Chandigarh: Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research run by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has been given a private university status by the Punjab cabinet on Tuesday. Permission has also been granted by it for the setting up of Khalsa University on the Khalsa College campus.

A green signal to these proposals has already been given by the committee, all that was needed was a cabinet consent on the same. However, Chief Minister, Prakash Singh Badal had given a nod to the letters of intent a month ago.

Named after Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh master and founder of holy city, Amritsar, the SGPC-run medical institute is currently affiliated to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) and SGPC Chief Avtar Singh Makkar is the chairman of the minority institute.

The medical institute will not be governed by the BFUHS, once having got the status of a university.
