Maharashtra: Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court is seeking MCI inspection report on the Government Medical College (GMC) in Chandrapur. The MCI has been asked to submit the report within next two weeks.

It has been further reported that the demand by the apex court to see the report is based on MCI’s rejection of the college's demand for approval for its new batch citing various deficiencies.

The Union health ministry has denied the permission to the college after it actually started in 2013-14. The first inspection round by MCI was conducted on December 29 and 30 in 2014. Afterwards, there has been no second inspection. Even though MCI has been invited to reinspect, no second inspection took place at the college. The college is reported to have complied with major deficiencies pointed out by MCI, however still could not procure permission due to rejection on technical grounds.

As reported by TOI, the orders came while hearing a case by Gadchiroli and Chandrapur residents, which was turned into a PIL before granting an interim relief, asking MCI and centre to start admissions process last year, thus benefiting 100 poor students.

It was only after court's intervention that the GMC actually admitted first batch of students last year. Chandrapur is among of most polluted cities in world with thermal power plants, coal mines, cement companies, the health of citizens is adversely affected, the petitioners added.
