Bombay HC lifts interim relief on the declaration of first list of MDS
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has recently lifted the interim stay on the declaration of the first selection list for Masters in Dental Surgery (MDS).
Earlier on April 4th, the court had given an interim stay on the publication of the selection list for Post-Graduate (PG) dental seats in Maharashtra which was scheduled to be released on 5th April. After the stay was lifted by the HC, the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHT CET) released the first selection list on 12th April.
A separate petition was filed by Dr Shivani Raghuvanshi, Dr Sanjana Wadewale and Dr Pranali Charde where they alleged discrepancies in the method of reserving seats under the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) quota in private colleges.
The Commissioner, MHT-CET, Anand Rayate told the Mumbai Mirror, "Since the court had granted an interim stay, we could not declare the first list. Now, the process will go on as scheduled."
The HC, however, made it clear the list will be subject to change after it will pass a final order in the case at the time of lifting the stay.
As of now, in Maharashtra, 50 % of medical seats in government-run medical colleges are for reserved category (SC/ST/OBC/ VJNT). Out of the other 50% which is known as the open category; 14% of seats go to Persons with Disability (PwD), defence and other quotas. There is also a special quota (depending on eligible candidates) for students from the reserved categories who are eligible for an open quota seat based on their scores, ranging from 3%-5%.

The final order in this regard will come depending on the fate of another petition related to the Maratha quota before the Bombay High Court. The Court has scheduled the final hearing on April 18.
For PG dental courses, 9 out of 37 seats in government and aided colleges, and 22 out of 383 seats in private colleges are for the open category. For MD, MS courses 233 of 972 seats in government and aided colleges and 37 of 469 seats in private colleges are for open category.
