Ahmedabad: Three hostellers of BJ Medical College partying to celebrate a birthday were beaten in the dead of night by allegedly drunk policemen, who arrived on the premises on a complaint lodged by some inmate of loud music playing in the hostel. The incident took place on Monday night. The police, on the other hand, allege to have been attacked by the celebrating boys, when they tried to dissuade them from playing loud music.

The sources stated Dhananjay Shashwat, Jayesh Siroiya and Bhuvan Jain — were the three who were bashed up after the police arrived at the hostel.

"Someone complained to the police that the students were playing loud music during the birthday party. Acting on the complaint, the police came to the hostel and then allegedly beat the students," a source said.

Soon after the alleged attack on the students, information spread asking medicos to gather at Dean’s office for a demonstration against the incident of attack.

"Today at 12.30am our batch mates — Jayesh Siroiya, Bhuvan Jain and Dhananjay Saraswat — were brutally assaulted by police on no legal grounds. This is not an attack on only one student but an attack on our entire batch. In an attempt to show our solidarity with the victims of such a brutal attack, we all students have decided to take this matter to our Dean Sir so that he can help us take the right steps to bring the perpetrators to justice (sic)," the message said.

According to the Shahibaug police’s version they received information at 12.10 am at the police control room about loud music being played in the College’s hostel. A police team responding to the call reached the spot to verify and put an end to the irritating noise being created by the revellers.

The police allege that on reaching the spot they were asked to get out. The boys got into a fight with the police when asked to switch off the music system. It is believed that the students then switched off the lights and got into a physical bash with the police.

The victims in their complaint alleged that the police team assaulted them at Atulyam 11 hostel with sticks till one of them broke.

So fierce became the battle that senior police officials had to intervene to calm frayed nerves. The students, however, have submitted an application mentioning police attack.

ACP F Division, Manjita Vanzara revealed that a probe had been ordered.

Incharge Dean said that the situation in the college was now normal as the students had called off their agitation after 3-4 hours, on getting government assurance of intervention in the matter reports TOI.
