Ranchi: In an attempt to combat shortage of doctors, the state government is planning to increase the number of Post Graduate medical seats in colleges. However, the state health department sources feel that the one poser that might come in the way of this effort would be shortage of professors and associate professors in the state's medical colleges. The new Medical Council of India (MCI), regulations mandate one professor for every three PG seats and two associate professor for every two PG seats.

Mr. Ramchandra Chandravanshi the state Health Minister held a meeting with Heads of three government aided medical colleges, before formally approaching the Medical Council of India for the recommended increase of PG MBBS seats.

Talking to TOI after the meeting, Chandravanshi said the state proposed to suggest an increase of 108 PG seats for the upcoming academic session. "We will push for 36 more seats each in Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Ranchi, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGMMC) Jamshedpur and Pataliputra Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) Dhanbad. The director of Rims and principals of MGMMC and PMCH will go to New Delhi and submit the proposal before MCI," Chandravanshi revealed to the TOI.

RIMS, with the highest number of PG seats in the state (183), however, faces a difficult situation as the promotion of its 74 professors and associate professors lies pending with the state health department.
