Patna: Over 1000 junior doctors associated with nine medical colleges in the state observed an indefinite strike to protest against the enrollment of AIIMS Patna students into PG medical courses in the government medical colleges through state quota instead central quota.

The medicos went on strike on Monday and put their demand for changes in the reservation policy. They demanded that the AIIMS Patna students should not be given a benefit of 50 per cent reservation.

The President of the Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Dr Vikash Kumar informed the HT that the MBBS pass-outs students from AIIMS Patna acquire the eligibility to avail 50 per cent reservation in PG seats in the AIIMS institutes located across the country. The benefit of Bihar quota would make them eligible for double reservation which was flawed; therefore the protesters demanded the state government amend clause 6.1 in its prospectus for PG medical seats in the state.

The Government last year had allowed the MBBS Doctors from AIIMS Patna to apply for the PG Courses under the Bihar quota.

The strike caused major inconvenience to the common people as the junior doctors, the main workforce of the Government Medical Colleges and Hospitals, were not present to provide their services to patients.

On the other hand, Dr Rajiv Ranjan Prasad, the Superintendent of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH Patna) Patna claimed that the healthcare services was not hit at PMCH.

He further informed UNI that the doctors from other government hospitals in Bhojpur, Buxar and other districts had been deputed at PMCH. He said that at least 22 doctors from outside PMCH had been deputed at the hospital so far to meet the situation.

He said that junior doctors would not call off their strike until state government stopped enrollment of AIIMS students into PG courses at the state's medical colleges through state quota.

Meanwhile, the PMCH Junior Doctors’ Association president Dr Shankar Bharti informed that junior doctor would not call off their strike until state government stopped enrollment of AIIMS students into PG courses at the state's medical colleges through state quota.

The admission of AIIMS students into PG medical courses in the state-run medical colleges will start from April 12.
