Patna : Four students of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), who were arrested after assaulting police officer, were remanded by a Patna court to a 14 day judicial custody. They have been sent to the Beur jail.

According to the Shastri Nagar Police Station, SHO Virendra Yadav, the four students who were accused of assault are: Arif Raza, Prince Kumar Singh, Arshad Nasim and Aditya Adhikari -- all second year MBBS students. According to police sources, they were booked under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 307 (attempt to murder). 200 police personnel were deployed on the college campus for maintaining peace, sources added.

The IGIMS students in protest against the police move to ensure bikers wore helmets, as per the supreme court order, went on a flash strike on Wednesday. The assault on the police personnel took place, when an ASI tried to stop two students, entering the college on a bike, without helmets.

The IGIMS Medical Superintendent, Dr. Prabhat Sinha expressed his inability to help the parents of two arrested students, Arshad and Aditya who sought his help for release of their wards.

"I told them evidence of assault on the cop is on the camera. Also, the case is sub-judice and therefore, the institute can't do anything," he said.

Dr. Sinha on being asked whether an inquiry would be instituted in the matter said that they would rather wait for the law to take its course. "We are in touch with senior district officials," he said, and informed that all extra force deployed on campus, had been done in consultation with him .

He also reiterated, that he had advised the students to come off the strike, as the evidence on camera about the students having attacked was clearly visible.
