Bihar: AIIMS Patna students go on one-day hunger strike, to continue boycotting classes
Patna: To mark the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the students protesting for improvement in facilities within AIIMS-Patna sat on a one-day hunger strike on Sunday. The students decided to continue boycotting classes, as a gesture to strengthen their protest, till Union Health Minister, J.P. Nadda meets them.
A AIIMS-Patna student told TOI that“The hunger strike was only for one day to mark Gandhi Jayanti,” While the students were in touch with the administration through exchange of letters and emails till Saturday, no such attempt was made on Sunday.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that 400-odd students of the institute went on demonstration boycotting their classes on 28th September 2016. It was reported that the students have been protesting against lack of teachers as well as basic infrastructure that includes lab facilities, blood bank and autopsy at the central medical institute.

Marking the third day of the strike and supporting their agitation, the students again submitted a fresh charter of demands to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director, G.K.Singh on Thursday.
In response to this as the , Dr. Singh posted a message on the Youtube for the striking students, in response to their communication, requesting them to return to their classrooms assuring them that their interests would be looked after. “You have experienced a lot. I am touched. I will always work for your welfare… return to the classes.”

The students however, seemed to stick to their agitation till the intervention of Union Health Ministry and demanded for a deadline for the fulfilment of their demands.
Now on the sixth consecutive day of the strike, the strike is still on and the students want the intervention of Union Health Minister and realization of their demands of improved facilities and increased appointment of teaching faculty within the institute.
AIIMS-Bhopal and AIIMS-Jodhpur have also hopped-in the protest by showing their solidarity with the students of AIIMS-Patna. In respect of the matter, an AIIMS-Patna student also claimed that “They have also decided to write to the Union health minister and the Prime Minister regarding poor infrastructure in their institutes.”A couple of NITs, including NIT-Srinagar, have also come out in support of AIIMS-Patna students.
Despite of the latest order given by the Union Health Ministry to send the Director General of Health Services of India (DGHS) to the medical college-cum-hospital AIIMS-Patna next week. The students have still not agreed and have intimidated that they will continue their protest until the Health Minister himself intervenes and comes to meet.
