Assam: BBCI introduces Super Speciality DM in Medical Oncology

Guwahati: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has given permission to Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) here to start a super speciality DM in Medical Oncology from the academic session 2017-18.


The Medical Council of India(MCI), had already assented to the starting of an MD in Radiation Oncology and MCh in Surgical Oncology at the BBCI. With the introduction of DM in Medical Oncology, BBCI can now take pride in having come a full circle with induction of both post-graduate and super specialty courses in all disciplines of Oncology, including Radiotherapy, Medical Oncology, and Surgical Oncology, in the north eastern region for the first time.


Presently, DM in Medical Oncology is offered in 19 institutions across Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat Andhra Pradesh,Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Dr AC Kataki, Director of BBCI, spoke about the acute shortage of oncologists in India in general and north east in particular.


He envisioned manpower shortage in the oncology world diminishing, with the introduction of numerous cancer centers in the north eastern region.


With a grants-in-aid of Rs 3.98 crore to the BBCI for capacity development in oncology, the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd has already set about the task of constructing ‘Capacity Development Centre in Oncology,’reports The Assam Tribune.
