AP: MCI derecognises four MD-Pathology seats at Kakatiya Medical College
Hyderabad: The Medical Council of India (MCI), has reduced MD (Pathology) course seats at Kakatiya Medical College (KMC), for want of tutors, equipment and lab facilities. While the college earlier had an approval for 6 seats in the course, MCI is reported to have reduced this number to two.
The government's failure to make amends over a period of five years has finally had the MCI axe fall. The state government authorities had been given a chance to clear matters with MCI's PG Medical Education Committee with regard to MD (pathology) course in KMC both in April and July.
"There has been a completely failure in providing necessary equipment in state-run medical colleges both by the Telangana government and the united Andhra Pradesh government," said a senior doctor told TOI, preferring to stay anonymous.
The MCI's PG Medical Education Committee 's meeting minutes on October 19 at Delhi recorded the following shortfalls at Kakatiya Medical College: One tutor, a pentahead microscope (costing about Rs 5 lakh) and a central research laboratory (CRL) that is worth around 2 crore. The CRL provides research facilities for streams of microbiology, pathology, bio-chemistry and pharmacology.
In the absence of the above stated manpower and facilities, that admissions done over and above 2 seats would be considered irregular and illegal, as they would be considered not in accordance with the MCI stipulations.
Sources have reported to the TOI that the KMC run MD (pathology course) has given degrees to 20 PG Medicos (four every year) which are considered 'unrecognized' according to the MCI, as the deficiencies have not been set right, ever since the seats were increased from two to six in the year 2011.
Director, Medical Education, Dr M Ramani, said, "We have already written to the Telangana State Medical Services & Infrastructure Development Corporation to supply necessary equipment."
Dr H Sandhya Rani, Principal,KMC, Warangal confirmed that five batches of PG medicos have passed out from the MD (pathology) course with 'unrecognized degrees.'
"Until the deficiencies are corrected, their degrees will not be recognised in states other than AP and Telangana or abroad," she said, adding that they could amend matters, as they had time till January .
