Andhra Pradesh consents to national proposal on the issue of medical seats

The state government has taken a decision to accept the central government's proposal to join the national pool for seats in the undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses. The decision has been taken keeping in mind the largesse of all India medical seats that would open to competing for the domicile student.

Addressing a press conference recently, Medical and Health Minister, Kamineni Srinivas said, "The State government was apprehensive that Article 371D would be a hurdle to join the national pool. The Centre, however, allayed the apprehensions. The Telangana government too agreed to join the pool."

In lieu of the 285(15%) seats earmarked by the state to the central pool, its students will now be able to compete for 4,442 seats available across the country. Similar being the case with 415 PG seats offered to the national pool by the state, in exchange for the 6,665 seats, the domicile candidates would compete for in the rest of the country.

Speaking about the Fatima Medical College fiasco, Dr. Srinivas said the government would either be filing a revision petition or a Special Leave Petition (SLP) to protect the career of the students.

Replying to a question Dr Srinivas said resident and private medical practitioners would be allowed to practice after having undergone the essential training required and acquisition of certification for it reports The Hindu.
