Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) and some private medical colleges like Kamineni are soon going to loose their supremacy in the super speciality curriculums, as other colleges like Osmania Medical College, Gandhi Medical College and Kakatiya Medical College,Warangal are joining the super specialty foray in the city. The soon to be taken initiative is the result of persistent demand made by colleges to the government, to introduce specialty courses in other institutions due to their rising need based demand.

"We want to introduce PG courses in emergency medicine, transfusion medicine and hospital administration. We have already sent our proposals to the Medical Council of India (MCI)," Dr M Ramani, Director of Medical Education said.

Courses like Emergency Medicine, Rheumatology, Geriatrics and Tropical Medicine are some of the specialty courses that will be introduced at the new colleges taking up super specialty studies.

Emergency medicine is gaining grounds, as a study to pursue, since it helps bring down mortality rates due to growing number of accidents. Specialists trained in emergency medicine are taught critical care treatment modalities.

"We are doing everything that is required to get permissions by increasing staff and also earmarking funds," Dr. Ramani told TOI. The plan is to introduce two or four seats in every college, of course the final decision will lie with the Council.

Osmania and Gandhi Medical Colleges are in readiness to introduce tropical medicine courses.

Graduate level degrees and Diploma Courses in Geriatrics are gradually gaining international weight age and are resulting in people being trained as specialist nurses to take care of aging patients.

The government apart from introducing super specialty courses is also planning to introduce post graduate courses in colleges like Government Medical College, Nizamabad and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Adilabad. Distant Learning Courses are also in the offing.

The Medical Council of India is soon going to get down to the task of inspecting infrastructural facilities available at colleges planning to introduce both super specialty and PG courses as part of their academic curriculum.

Telangana has been granted an additional 157 PG seats lately, on the basis of the student teacher ratio.
