The revised guidelines of the MCI sanction of three PG medical seats for one Professor post has made the state government send a proposal to the Medical Council of India(MCI), to sanction another 150 Post-Graduate medical seats, in the 8 government medical colleges of the state.

The government proposal was sent to the Council by the Director of Medical Education, Dr N Subba Rao. According to sources, in the DME office, the MCI, earlier, sanctioned two PG seats for one Professor post.

The government's ' increase seats' request, will have the MCI team visit these colleges for an inspection to see if the colleges have the requisite infrastructure, hostel facility, labs and classrooms for granting of these additional PG seats.

Based on the recommendations of the inspecting team the state government will be informed of the Council"s decision on the same. In all probability, if compliances are met, seats would be granted before the commencement of the next academic year.

There are 800 PG medical seats in government medical colleges and another 500 in the private ones. The private medical colleges will have to apply separately to the MCI for more PG seats. Both government medical colleges and as well as, private institutions will get their respective sanctions of PG medical seats.

The State government meanwhile has also given a nod for implementation of the automatic career advancement scheme for Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors to secure more medical seats.

The government of Tamil Nadu has already promoted Assistant Professors as Associate Professors after completion of five years under this scheme.
With the government implementing time-bound promotions scheme, faculty will get promotions and medical colleges-more seats.

Director of Medical Education, Dr N Subba Rao speaking to Hans India said, "I have sent proposals to the MCI to sanction another 150 PG medical seats in the Government Medical Colleges in the State. The MCI will inspect the colleges and see infrastructure. Later, it will take a decision. Private medical colleges will also get additional PG seats. We have started the process to give promotions to the Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors in the government medical colleges. The government has to take a decision to solve Fathima Medical College students' problem. "
