AMRIT pharmacy at Gauhati medical college perpetually out of medicine stock

Gauhati: The Gauhati Medical College and Hospital's Amrit pharmacy more often than not seems to be turning away the rural and urban underprivileged patients looking for medicines, as it is perpetually out of stock on medicines wanted.

The setting up of Amrit pharmacies in the hospital had sent a ripple of joy among the urban and rural poor, the outlet was meant for procuring medicines at an economical or discounted price. However, today it has turned into a stupendous disappointment, with all medicines being out of stock more often than not.

The Gauhati medical college is believed to be going out of its way to keep its interiors clean. However, it seems to be in the doldrums on the procurement of medicine reports the Assam Sentinel.

The patients coming in for treatment at this facility very often find not even the essential stock on the Amrit pharmacy shelves. Speaking to Assam Sentinel, an attendant of a patient under treatment at GMCH, said, "My child is suffering from dengue. He has high temperature. We've come here in the morning for treatment as he has a serious fever. After a very long wait we've been allowed to see the doctor but none of the medicines prescribed by the doctor is available in the pharmacy. We had to rush to nearby private pharmacies for medicines."

The patients though aware of the work done towards cleanliness in the GMCH said that emphasis will have to be laid on medicines being made available on the Amrit shelves.
Another patient stated, "I've come from Khumtai, Golaghat for better treatment of burn injuries on my face. I'm from a poor family and GMCH is our only ray of hope. We can't afford to go to private hospitals. We're very happy with the government's announcement on Amrit Pharmacy. We're said that we would be provided with medicines on discount. Pathetically, I didn't find any of my medicines here."
"I hope medicines will be made available for patients very soon," he told the Sentinel.
