All India Quota not to be forgone by ESIC Medical College this year

Chennai: Government authorities clearing stand on ESIC Medical College admissions in Chennai said that 65 of the 100 seats would continue to be filled by state counselling.

Health Minister C Vijaya Basker talking to reporters recently said that they were yet to receive information from the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) on whether they would surrender 65 seats this year as they planned to admit students for all the 100 seats through ‘All India Counselling’.

An ESIC official speaking to Indian Express revealed that they had done away with the plan and admissions for 65 seats for ESI hospital at K K Nagar, Chennai, would be done through State medical counselling. “Until last year, apart from the 15 per cent all India quota seats, the remaining 20 per cent seats were filled by the Corporation separately. This year, these remaining seats also were submitted to Director-General of Health Services and they will be filled through the all India counselling.”

Speaking about seat admissions at the Coimbatore ESIC medical college and hospital State Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said their would be no change in seat reservation pattern. Therefore 65 % seats inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in February last year would be filled through state counselling.

ESIC Medical College, Coimbatore found itself cornered when the Medical Council of India refused to renew MBBS admissions for the forthcoming academic year giving reasons like unhygienic student hostel rooms, under-qualified staff and shortage in essential facilities.

However, the Corporation met with the above MCI compliance and ensured renewal of recognition .
