The medical college premises were apparently being used as a liquor godown.

Meerut: 200 cartons of liquor were found stocked illegally in the under construction private ward building of Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College by the police on a tip-off. The discovery led to yet another uproar in the college after the belly dancing and bringing in of alcohol by doctors in ambulances episode to celebrate a party on premises last year.

It is believed that the contractor Rajat Tyagi who owns two liquor shops near the medical college was using the room as a godown for liquor. Rajat Tyagi, when questioned, claimed the stock to be legal and said that it had been kept on the medical college premises to save it from the rains.

Superintendent of police (city), Ranvijay Singh told TOI, “Police raided the premises after a tip-off and found the consignment stocked inside a building used as construction material godown by contractor Rajat Tyagi, who had been assigned some construction work in the medical college. One person has been detained for questioning in the case.”

Speaking to TOI, Ajit Chaudhary, Chief Medical Superintendent, LLRM, said, “We came to know of the development and informed the police. We have canceled the contract of Tyagi and soon an FIR will be lodged by the medical college against him.”

Station in-charge of Medical Police Station, Satish Kumar, said: “Medical college authorities have filed a case against Rajat Tyagi, Rajiv Bhati, and salesman Guddu under relevant sections of 60 Excise Act. Tyagi and Bhati both have liquor shops just outside the medical college, and both were using college premises as a godown.

This is not the first time that this medical college has been in the news because of alcohol. Earlier, it was reported that an alumni bash of doctors held at Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College Hospital, crossed respectable boundaries when ambulances were seen ferrying cartons of liquor bottles to the venue of the get-together and Russian belly dancers swayed sensuously to foot tapping music to entertain alumni assembled to celebrate the event. The occasion was the silver jubilee celebration organized by the old school association at the Garh road premises of the college.
