Chennai: The ruling AIADMK today announced a cash assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the family of a medical aspirant from Tiruchirappalli who allegedly committed suicide recently after she failed to clear the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test.

Chief Minister K Palaniswami, who is also AIADMK joint coordinator, and party coordinator O Panneerselvam expressed grief over the death of K Subasri, daughter of an AIADMK labour union functionary.

"A financial assistance of Rs five lakh will be given to the family of Subasri," the two leaders said in a statement.

They appealed to students against taking such extreme steps.

Apparently upset over her inability to clear the NEET, Subasri had ended her life by hanging herself.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that an advocate moved the Madras High Court, seeking contempt proceedings against the Tamil Nadu government for “failing” to implement its directions to prevent students failing in medical entrance examination NEET from committing suicide.
