A new Burns Unit to be set up at Goa Medical College

PANAJI: Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital, Bambolim’s Plastic Surgery wing will be inaugurating its burns unit soon. Staff for the unit has already been deployed. Till now the plastic surgery department shared its burns unit with the general surgery department, which has limited beds.


The Health Minister, Vishwajit Rane also expressed his desire to further strengthen the plastic surgery department and the overall performance of the GMC hospital. Mr. Rane on Thursday told TOI that his government has approved of 75 technical and regular staff for the burns and plastic surgery units.


A limited number of beds for burns put to limit the no of admissions to the burns wing confessed a GMC doctor. On an average, the burns unit receives 10 to 15 cases every month.


The GMC’s plastic surgery wing which is relatively a new addition mostly handles pediatric burns and cases of children getting accidental burns.


Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, in his budget speech in March, had mentioned establishing a state-of-art burns unit at GMC. The unit is to have ultra-modern equipment and machinery and trained staff is to be will be appointed for round-the-clock service reports TOI.
