700 MBBS, 221 PG seats increased after formation of Telangana: Minister

Hyderabad : As many as 700 MBBS and 221 PG seats in both Government and Private Colleges were increased in the State after formation of separate Telangana, Medical and Health Minister Dr K Laxma Reddy informed the Assembly.


Dr Reddy, during question hour, said that five Medical (MBBS) colleges have been set up with the students strength of 700. The colleges were Government Medical College, Mahabubnagar (150), ESI, Medical College, Sanathnagar, Hyderabad (10), RVM Institute of Medical Sciences, Medak (150), Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences, Vikarabad (150), Maheswara Medical College and Hospital, Medak (150).


The Minister said that the government has taken up for the first time in the country to promote and encourage research activity in the Government Medical Colleges for which Rs 12 crore has been allocated during 2016-17 as Research Fund. About Rs 6 crore has been released so far, he added.


He said that the government has been launching Medical Colleges one after another to reach out their target and establish one Medical College in every district in the state.


The government was spending Rs 60 crore every year on PG students who were working in rural areas (Mandatory) but not reaching expected targets, Dr Reddy said, adding that the government was planning to appoint permanent PG doctors in place of PG students.
