7.5 lakh medical aspirants register for NEET-2; 6 lakh reapplications

The total number of students who have applied for NEET-2 is now coming out to be a staggering 7.5 lakh. Out of which, 70% aspirants are reported to be reappearing for NEET. This is a high percentage considering that these lots of 70% have taken this decision after having surrendered their NEET-1 scores. These aspirants are now seeking medical admission, given a second chance to better their scores. This time they can be more relaxed, as earlier there was a controversy surrounding NEET-to make it a single entrance gateway for medical admissions in India.

June 25 was the last date of submission for the form for registering for NEET-2. The total number of aspirants registered for NEET-2 is now over 7.5 lakh; out of which 6 lakh are reappearing.

On one hand there are many students who have re-registered for the exam; however, there are very less students- only thirty per cent, around 1.35 lakh students have freshly applied for the NEET-2. Seems like after the NEET ordinance was passed by the centre, granting exemption to states to offer their own medical course has affected the choice of aspirants to appear for NEET-2.

Experts have also implied that since NEET is only applicable for admission is private colleges, students are seeking affordable medical admission in government quota in state run colleges.

Pravin Shingare, director, Directorate of Medical Education and Research, Maharashtra, said to TOI that that they were expecting more numbers to participate in the phase-II of the test. "But the figures are an indication that most students aspire to get into affordable state-run medical colleges. There is also a possibility that a large chunk of the total students taking NEET - about one fifth - are from Maharashtra alone, who are keen on admissions to private and deemed institutions here," said Shingare. Institutions run by MGM, D Y Patil, Pravara, Ashwini trusts are the ones to have deemed status.

Keyur Cholera, from a coaching institute in Vile Parle, implied that students are not too keen to appear for another test after a gap of three months. Many students have gone through extensive preparation for two years and already appeared for CET. Many students will seek to appear for NEET next year.

A CBSE official implied that this data also includes figures for students who have applied for NEET-1, however, did not appear. Even few states in North have given their consent to use NEET scores for admitting students.

Some important Details about NEET-2

• NEET-2 will be conducted on July 24 from 10 am to 1 pm- for 3 hours


• 180-objective type question paper format. Subjects included Physics, Chemistry and Bio ((Botany & Zoology)


• Eligibility criteria for aspirants is passing class 12 from a recognised board of institute


• As per the SC directive, the medical admission are expected to be completed by September 30


• The combined results are expected to be declared on August 17, 2016
