64-slice CT scan arrives at GMCH, Kozhikode

KOZHIKODE: After much delay, the Government Medical College Hospital is getting its third advanced technology CT Scan machine, The 64 slice high technology and sophisticated scanner machine has eased pressures at the hospital, as the already available two machines are not functional at the moment. The two in operational CT scan machines were bought in 2000 and 2013. Of the two, the first one which underwent repair after a while continues to lie in the hospital in an unused state. While the second has been buckling under overload and has been repaired many a time and is at the moment also undergoing repairs


The crisis that had brewed ever since the machines lay unused or in a state of repair had led to the Hospital Development Committee to apply for a new CT scanner two years ago, at a cost of Rs 4 Crore. With the government having sanctioned the money and the machine purchased thereafter, it is is now all set to be installed.


Briefing about the new machine, Dr VR Rajendran the College Principal said, "The 64 slice scanners are Whole Body CT Scanners with fast scanning speed, low dose, and excellent image quality providing the complete range of CT applications.The 4D Dynamic capability allows for coverage of large organs without additional contrast. At the same time, the images obtained through this procedure are sharp and crystal clear, enabling cardiologists to spot even the smallest of blockages at a very early stage. It is also used to determine the conditions of stents and bypass surgery grafts of patients who have had angioplasties or CABG."


The members of the hospital development committee, however, revealed that though the CT scanner was sanctioned two years ago, the State Government had delayed in making a payment towards it leading them to approach the High Court, reports Deccan Herald. The facility on an average scans 200 patients on a daily basis.
