Tamil Nadu : 50 PHCs to start dental wards

Chennai: The State Health Minister Dr. C Vijaya Baskar announced the government’s decision to start dental wards at 50 upgraded Public Health Centres in Tamil Nadu.

The Minister was replying to a question raised by Mailam MLA R Masilamani during question hour in the assembly.

A few years ago, a report appearing in the Hindu on April 20 ,2013, spoke of observations made by the Madras Dental College’s camp for children in Corporation-run schools to have found 85 per cent of children suffering from some form of abnormality in their teeth

The press report cited lack of awareness of Chennai Corporation’s dental clinics as one of the factors contributing to inadequate oral hygiene among a number of residents in the city.

Many residents in slums do not visit dentists on account of the unaffordable nature of such treatment it further added..
