Karnataka: Medical students charged for ragging in Sullia

Mangaluru: Ragging in medical colleges seems to be the norm of the day with oppressor students going as far as hurling death threats at their juniors, often the victims of the menace. A recent case being that of KVG Medical College and KVG Dental College.


The Sullia Police on Wednesday, arrested 10 students from both these colleges on charges of ragging and under the Indian Penal Code provisions. The victims and the accused both hail from Kerala.


According to information released by the police, the accused allegedly ragged, a twenty year old, second year MBBS student Nishanth, and his friends, Ashish, Rishad, Sharath, Manu, Arun, Prabin and Manar on 28th December , 2016 on the hostel premises.


The victim first lodged a complaint with the college Principal on Monday, and then decided to report the matter to the police on Tuesday.


As per the complainant’s narration of the incident, he and his friends were summoned to Kannan’s (the main accused) room on the night of 28th December and hurled abuses at and some even assaulted. The victims alleged that the seniors shouted at them saying that juniors did not know how to show respect to the seniors.


The victims further alleged that sounds of approaching people made the seniors let go of the victims. They further alleged, they were later called back to the room and threatened that they would be killed, if the incident was reported to anyone.


The accused who were produced in the jurisdiction magistrate’s court and later released on bail have been charged for serious offences. The charges against them include: rioting, unlawful assembly, wrongful confinement, voluntarily causing hurt, intentionally causing insult and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code and ragging under Section 116 of the Karnataka Education Act 1983.
