Hyderabad: Kidney disease in the country seems to be attacking the young increasingly, with the ailing falling below the span of 40 years, recently warned doctors at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences.

The rush at the dialysis and renal transplant unit seems to be on a gradual rise. To meet the increased demand, additional dialysis machines were provided and inaugurated, as well, at the Nizam Hospital, recetnly .

Telangana Health Minister C. Laxma Reddy, who presided over the inaugural ceremony, expressed alarm at the increasing numbers ailing and the reduction in the age of those hit by kidney diseases. In all, 40 new machines have been provided to the hospital.

“We have seen increasing number of cases, where three generations of a family were treated in a span of a decade. While survival after treatment has increased, the age of the onset of kidney problems has also decreased,” said Sree Bhushan Raju, Head, Nephrological department told the Hindu.

Every month approximately 60-70 patients get added to the already existing list availing the dialysis facility, informed Dr. Raju. This results in the running of the dialysis centre unit throughout the day. In some cases, patients are asked to come in well past midnight to avail treatment.

“With more machines, we expect the burden to reduce. We also hope that centres can come up in the periphery of the city so that patients need not travel to Hyderabad for dialysis,” said Dr. Raju.

The Siddipet Government Hospital, he said is one centre that falls under NIMS, reports the Hindu.
