4 Students of CMC Vellore Suspended for torturing a monkey to death

Chennai: Four Medical Students associated with Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC Vellore) have been suspended on account of allegedly torturing a monkey to death, here. It is further alleged that they then buried the body close to the college mess with the help of college staff

A video, shot by animal rights activists while exhuming the body, shows the hands of the monkey tied behind its back and a telephone cable wrapped around its neck. The pictures have gone viral all over the social media, leading the whole country shocked.

"The female bonnet macaque wandered into the hostel on November 19. The four medicos caught it with a blanket, tied its hands and then tortured it in front of other students. They beat it with sticks and belts, put a rod into its anus and killed it," Chennai-based animal welfare activist Shravan Krishnan informed TOI.

"The general secretary of the hostel immediately suspended them and informed the college authorities," he said. An FIR has also been lodged against the students has been registered a case under IPC section 429 and various sections of Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 . The students allegedly involved in the act have been identified as Jasper Samuel Sahoo, Rohit Kumar Yenukotti, Arun Loui Sasikumar and Alex Chekalayil.

A police officer investigating the case added "We are probing. We understand there is monkey menace on the campus. Around 40 to 50 monkeys have been disturbing hostel inmates in their rooms and mess."

A college official informed NDTV, "All these students are in their third year. We are probing. We will not tolerate this. There would be tougher action if they are found guilty."

The incident comes just months after two medical students from Chennai were arrested for throwing a dog from a terrace.
