4 New Government Medical Colleges get MCI nod for 400 MBBS Seats; Admissions to start soon

Srinagar: 4 medical colleges with a total of 400 MBBS seats are soon going to start the admission process for UG medical aspirants for this academic year of 2019-20 in the Jammu and Kashmir.


Officials of the State Health and Medical Education department informed the news agencies that they are likely to receive the Letter of Permission (LoP) from Medical Council of India (MCI) for 4 Medical Colleges including Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in Anantnag, Baramulla, Kathua and Rajouri to admit 100 MBBS students in each medical institute from the current academic session of 2019-2020.


Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the GMC Baramulla had received permission from the Medical Council of India to start functioning from the academic year 2019-20 with an allotment of 100 MBBS seats. GMC Anantnag has got the MCI nod for 100 MBBS seats as well. While Kathua and Rajouri GMCs have recently received the MCI's consent to start the course.

The Union government has approved the construction of medical colleges in five districts of Jammu and Kashmir. With the completion of the new medical colleges in Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Anantnag and Baramulla, 500 MBBS students would be annually added to the overall capacity of the course in the state.


Anantnag's Medical college's construction will be completed by the next year.

Currently there are 500 MBBS seats at state run medical colleges. Now with the MCI giving its permission to 4 medical colleges, 400 MBBS seats will be added taking the total to 900.


"The state government has submitted the required undertakings of the medical colleges and shall also communicate to the Board of Professional Entrance Examination (BOPEE) for increasing 400 seats in new medical colleges, 100 each in Anantnag, Baramulla, Rajouri and Kathua districts," the health department officials informed.


50 per cent seats in each medical college would be reserved for female candidates.


The addition of 400 MBBS seats will take the total number of seats available each year in all medical colleges in J&K to 900, the officials informed IANS.


The recruitment of staff and faculty for these medical colleges has been done in a transparent manner after inviting applications through a web portal.


The Government Medical College, Doda is under the process of consideration for 50 admissions in the Medical Council of India.
