A total of 240 post-graduate medical seats from the central counselling round have gone Maharashtra’s way after no takers for them were found.

While the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has allotted 50% of these seats to the open category and the remaining half have been distributed amongst various quotas.

Students who have been provided seat allocations in private colleges but cannot afford the new tuition hikes plan to write to the CET commissioner and the DMER.

The first admission round had several private medical colleges abstain from participating as they demanded that they are allowed to charge management and NRI quota students at par.

After a month’s tussle with the state authorities, these colleges agreed to the state’s 1:4:5 fee plan. The merit students under this plan are to pay fee decided by the Fee Regulating Authority, management students four times that fee and NRI candidates five times the merit quota fee reported TOI.

Of the 11 private colleges, only a few colleges like Kashibai Navale and ACPM, Dhule, admitted students during round one after making them sign an undertaking that if fees rose, they would have to pay the additional sum.
