Maharshtra: A government MBBS college for Nashik soon

Nashik: The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences(MUHS) under its 5 year plan is going to start a government MBBS medical college, all in an effort to increase the seat ratio of North Maharashtra. With this, the long awaited wait of the city to have its own government MBBS college comes to an end.


"At present, the region-wise student intake capacity per one lakh population for Konkan (Mumbai) region is 2.83, for Pune region is 3.18, for Nagpur region is 4.68, for Marathwada (Aurangabad) region is 2.67, for Amravati region is 2.66 and for Nashik (north Maharashtra) region is 0.54.


According to data, presently there is no medical college in 13 districts, , no dental college in 16 districts, no Ayurveda college in seven districts, no Unani college in 30 districts and no Homeopathy college in nine districts of the north Maharashtra region. Three districts of Maharashtra have no nursing institutes, 20 districts are without physiotherapy colleges; 33 districts have nonoccupational therapy colleges, and 32 districts are without any Bachelor of Audiology, Speech Language Pathology college.


The goal of the MUHS is to make existing intake capacity of students at district levels equal .Therefore, the initiative to start health science colleges of different streams in every district, is being undertaken, said Vice-Chancellor, MUHS, Dr Mohan Khamgaonkar.


If the prospective plan to start medical institutions in Maharashtra succeeds, bringing about equitable distribution, north Maharashtra will have six new health science institutes, Homoeopathy colleges in Ahmednagar and Jalgaon, an MBBS, BAMS along with a nursing college in Nashik, and another in Ahmednagar. Tribal medical colleges will be given concessions.
