Nagpur: Cochlear impalnts at IGGMC soon
Nagpur: Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC) is ready to open a new cochlear implant division to operate congenitally deaf children with low income groups at free of cost. This comes under the Government scheme of 'Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/Fitting of Aid or Appliances' or ADIP scheme.
Working towards this cause, Dr Kapre and IGGMC college authorities had signed an MoU with the Neeti Clinics in July last year. This specified cochlear implant surgeries to be done by the Neeti team as well as experts from Mumbai like Dr Milind Kirtane from Hinduja Hospital. Dr Madan Kapre and his daughter Dr Gauri Kapre Vaidya at Neeti are the present ENT surgeons in the city at Neeti Clinics, reported TOI.
The merger will help to perform the surgery at IGGMC and also provide services of audiologists and speech therapists etc free to the patients for about three years, the period required for children born deaf to start speaking.
The activity would result in the relief for those children who are suffering from hearing disabilities due to their low standard of income. With the opening of the cochlear implant centre, the low income groups would be able to get the quality treatment at free of cost.
The said scheme would help the 2 type of beneficiaries mainly from the following are the categories:
As per the sources more private doctors would be joining the project at IGGMC to make the project largescale . Apart from other services, the doctors will be providing their post operative services free of cost.
The Director of Medical Education and Research, Dr Pravin Shingare said that he is ready to get cochlear implant surgeries funded by department of medical education and and research provided they could conduct the surgery on their own."I want all 14 colleges in state to realize that first they should show they are capable of performing a surgery before demanding money for it," Shingare said.
Though Union ministry of health and family welfare has given the nod to the same, a written permission letter is yet to reach the hospital.

- The persons with income up to Rs15,000 a month who would get the implant free of cost.
- Persons with income ranging between Rs15-20,000 will get 50% concession on the cost of the implant, which is about Rs5.5 to 6 lakh.
