The Medical Council of India(MCI), has finally consented to the 500 Gian Sagar Medical College MBBS student shift to other private colleges as proposed by the Punjab Government. With the Council consenting on the issue, the shift initiative now lies with the Union Health Ministry.

Gian Sagar Medical College that runs various medical, dental, nursing and physiotherapy courses has been facing financial instability for months now, leading to suspension of classes at the college, paramedical and faculty going on strike since February 1, due to nonpayment of wages since October last year.

"The meeting was held on Tuesday, but the approval is merely a recommendation to the central government, which shall give the final orders to the state government," said a medical Council official preferring to stay anonymous reports HT.

The student shift is meant to be on the basis of merit, category, quota and other criteria applicable in the state, as per the plan submitted by the state government. The final plan submission to the Council does have certain changes as sought by the Punjab and Haryana High Court say sources.

The Council's decision to consent to student shift to other medical colleges comes after the state government refused to take over reins of the college to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Punjab Advocate General, Atul Nanda, who appeared on behalf of the state at a resumed hearing on a petition filed by some students for resumption of classes said that the government was not aware of the college's liabilities. It neither had the resources or the expertise to take over the college. He was replying to a court query in the face of the Gian Sagar Educational and Charitable Trust failing to put forth trustee details and clarify its financial status among other information asked for by the court on the second deadline appearance in Court.
