Withdrawal of Affiliation of Kannur Medical College : Kerala HC dismisses plea

The Admission Supervisory Committee recommendation to withdraw affiliation of the college to KUHS was the outcome of a student’s complaint seeking reimbursement of the fee collected by the college management.

Kochi: The Admission Supervisory Committee for Professional College’s order recommending withdrawal of affiliation of Kannur Medical College for 2018-19 to the Kerala University of Health Sciences(KUHS) which was challenged in a petition, was dismissed by the Kerala High Court on Wednesday.

The petition filed by the Kannur MC principal alleged that the committee’s order was illegal and had not been heard of before the issuance of the order.

The withdrawal of affiliation had been recommended by the committee because the college had failed to refund the fee collected from students admitted for the 2016-17 academic year.

The court noted the college ’s failure in compliance with stipulations for granting admission and charging fees. Repeated directives by the committee to the college authorities resulted in failed compliance on the part of the college, towards refunding of fee to the students. This, in turn, resulted in the committee recommend withdrawal of affiliation from Kannur Medical College to KUHS.

The Admission Supervisory Committee recommendation to withdraw affiliation of the college to KUHS was the outcome of a student’s complaint seeking reimbursement of the fee collected by the college management.

The complainant alleged that the management had collected Rs20 lakh to Rs50 lakh from students, besides collecting bank guarantees to secure future payments from students.

The parents submitted that they had arranged admission of their wards in other medical colleges, thinking that their money would be reimbursed reported the TNIE.

The committee had asked the college management to pay half the amount by July 27 to the complainants. When the case came up for hearing on July 25 before the Committee, an adjournment was sought by the College Principal which was rejected by the committee.
