With 3300 MBBS seats lost, Uttar Pradesh to seek review of MCI decision

Lucknow: With a total of 23600 MBBS seats not being accorded approval across the country for this academic session, the state of Uttar Pradesh has appeared to be the biggest loser with losing an opportunity of a whooping 3300 seats

10 New Medical Colleges in the state have been denied permission of establishment costing the state a total of 1150 seats, while the Ministry has closed the admissions doors on 16 existing Medical Colleges. With 2,150 MBBS seats in the state having been disapproved by the Medical Council of India(
    MCI
) in these existing medical colleges, the UP government has sought a review of the same by the center.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that in the state, 10 new medical colleges will not be able to takeoff due to infrastructural and faculty deficiencies. A situation like this has arisen when state hospitals and medical colleges are already professional and trained manpower paucity.

Not only this, the MCI has also struck a blow at the King George's Medical University, Lucknow by disapproving four of its courses- MCh (neurosurgery), DM (critical care medicines), MCh (Urology) and - MCh (plastic and reconstructive surgery), apart from MCh (cardiovascular and thoracic surgery) at Super-specialty Paediatrics Hospital and PG Teaching Institute, Noida.

When questioned Medical Education Minister, Ashutosh Tandon told TOI, "We have approached the Union health ministry with a request for a fresh inquiry of these medical colleges by the MCI."

However, others are not very optimistic about UPs medical colleges. Talking to TOI, a member of the MCI cried, "Only God can save UP's new medical colleges and the careless manner in which the state government is running them". He regretted that the UP government is on a spree to build the medical colleges, even as there are no connecting roads, no regular electricity supply, no safety or social life for the faculty and students. "If the scrutiny is more ruthless, a good number of medical colleges could be closed down, which would be better than producing doctors who are not able to take care of the patients.”
