VIMSAR: PG Students attack residence of director, Call for Indefinite Strike

Sambalpur: Trouble has mounted at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research with the news of the institute's PG students pelting stones at the director's residence and announcing an indefinite strike against the institute director's way of functioning.

PTI reports that Students of the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) allegedly threw stones at the residence of its director Aswini Pujahari leading to the gherao of the local police station by local residents. The stone throwing took place late last night and hundreds of residents of Burl and Sambalpur gheroed the Burla police station demanding action against the culprits.

The trouble started last night when two post graduate students of VIMSAR had a dispute with a patients attendant in the hospital over alleged delay in treatment. The attendant had videographed the doctors actions on his phone and threatened that he would take up the matter with the director.

The students then allegedly thrashed the attendant and also informed the other students about the incident. Subsequently, a large number of post graduate and undergraduate students of VIMSAR surrounded its director Aswini Pujahari's quarters and reportedly pelted stones. They also allegedly hurled verbal abuses.

Locals gathered at Burla this morning and marched towards the medical college today in protest. However, police stopped them near the hospital and later the people gheraoed Burla police station and demanded action against the students.

Pujahari confirmed the verbal abuse against him and said the students had even spat on him through the windows. They had also tried to break the windows and doors of his quarters.

Three cases have been registered in this connection. On was lodged by the attendant, while the students lodged a counter case against him. Pujahari too lodged one.

    Students Call Indefinite Strike

The students at the Institute have announced a cease work on account of institute director's way of functioning, alleging that he was the one who actually instigated the public to attack the PG and UG students of the college.

Student representative of the institute Himansu Mishra said "We have resorted to cease work as the director has created a negative environment in the institute. We are not willing to work under him. The director is taking decisions without consulting anybody."

"We also demand the director withdraw the case against students and create positive environment in the institute. We want him to stop humiliating students," he said adding, "We will continue our agitation till government representatives or the director meets us over the issue."

The students, including 240 PG students, 150 house surgeons and 750 under graduate students of the institution have gone on a strike expressing resentment over functioning of the director.

Students have also lodged a case against the director in Burla police station today. In their complaint, they alleged that the director instigated the public to attack UG and PG students yesterday.
