UP government slashed medical education budget, critiques cry foul

Lucknow: With Gorakhpur’s Child deaths attracting national attention, the cutting down of budget allocation for medical education by the Yogi Adityanath Government has people speculating. More so, as this head funds the BRDMC and other state run colleges.

Fund allocation for 14 medical colleges and their affiliated teaching hospitals has been made less than half, dropping from Rs 2,344 crore in 2016-17 to Rs 1,148 crore for 2017-18.

The BRDMC allocation has lessened from Rs 15.9 crores in 2016-17 to Rs 7.8 crore for 2017-18; with its machine allocations going down from Rs 3 crore to a meagre Rs 75 lakh.

The fall in fund allocation across medical colleges varied from Rs. 15.9 crore each for the Kanpur and Allahabad Colleges to Rs 3.3 crore and Rs 4.2 crore, respectively, reports TOI.
